Your Chance to gain the CMDThe Union’s CMD can be helpful for any club secretary or management committee member. You can look at questions and answers posed to those studying the CMD on the linked pages. If you would like more information about the CMD course then contact maria.barry@wmciu.org Even if a club member has no intentionof sitting the examination they are encouraged to enrol. The very fact of reading the lessons will educate any club member. The object is to stimulate and help those club members who are, or aspire to become, club secretaries or other officers of clubs, and those who wish to acquire a status in the sphere of club management. The course of study for the Diploma is based on two Union books, "Five Hundred Points in Club Law" and "Club Book-keeping and Financial Control". A club officer who has a practical knowledge of the contents of these two books, who knows their own club rules, and appreciates that in matters of doubt or difficulty, advice and guidance can be obtained from Union Head Office by the club secretary, is the kind of officer the Union has in mind for the award of the Club Management Diploma. The books must be purchased from club secretaries via the local Branch Office. They are not obtainable from Head Office. The course is covered by a series of six monthly lessons beginning in October each year. The lessons indicate the chapters in the two handbooks to be studied, and attention is drawn to matters requiring particular study. Some Branches operate tutorials. With the fourth lesson is enclosed an invitation to sit the examination, which is normally held on separate Saturdays in May. It is in two Sections: 1) Club Law and Administration and; 2) Club Accountancy. Students can attempt either one Section or both Sections in the same year. Both sections must be passed within two years to obtain a full CMD. The venues are fixed locally, wherever possible, to suit the convenience of students. HOW TO REGISTER AS A CANDIDATE Any male member of a Union club may register as a candidate, providing he holds the Union Associate Card and current Pass Card. Females who are members of Union clubs are allowed to take the course and sit the examination. Enrolment forms are available from the Education Department, Club & Institute Union, 253/254 Upper Street, London N1 1RY.
